heat oven to 350°F. grease 8 x 8 x 2-inch pan with butter flavor crisco.
combine butter flavor crisco and milk in large microwave-safe bowl. microwave at 50% (medium). stir after 1 minute. repeat until melted (or melt on rangetop in large saucepan on low heat). stir in sugar. stir in egg quickly. combine flour, baking powder and salt. stir into sugar mixture. stir in vanilla and nuts. spread in pan.
bake at 350°F for 27 to 30 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. cool in pan on cooling rack. cut into 2 x 2-inch squares.
