preheat oven to 350°F. in mixing bowl, combine the cake flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. add the 1 cup milk and the crisco. beat with electric mixer at medium speed for 2 minutes, or beat vigorously by hand for 300 strokes. add egg whites, the 1/3 cup milk, and the vanilla. beat for 2 minutes more or 300 strokes. pour batter into 2 greased and floured 9 x 1-1/2-inch round layer pans. bake at 350°F for 25 to 30 minutes or till cake tests done. cool 15 minutes; remove cake from pans. or, bake 35 to 40 minutes in a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.
