separate onion slices into rings. place in shallow dish. pour milk over onions. soak 30 minutes. turn twice.
heat 2 or 3 inches crisco to 365°F in deep fryer or deep saucepan.
combine flour and salt in paper or plastic bag. add onion rings, a few at a time. shake to coat.
fry, a few at a time, in shortening heated to 365°F. fry about 2 or 3 minutes or until golden brown. turn once. drain on paper towels. salt lightly. serve immediately.
