preheat oven to 350°F.
combine flour, sugar, baking powder, ginger, and salt in a bowl.
beat egg in a bowl until thick. add milk and melted crisco, continuing to beat until blended. add to dry ingredients and mix just enough to moisten flour. add bran flakes and with not more than 15 strokes, quickly and lightly stir until bran flakes are just moistened.
turn batter into a greased 8-1/2- x 4-1/2- x 2-1/2-inch loaf pan.
bake at 350°F for 45 to 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
cool for 5 minutes in pan on a rack, remove from pan, and cool thoroughly on rack.
